Diving Deeper into Yoga

The Healthy World

Body is an outward expression of that which is taking place within the mind, the soul (subconscious), and the spirit (superconscious) of the individual. Thus, any healing technique which deals only with the physical body and the energy field of the individual tends to accomplish one thing: it jump starts the individual, so to speak, and gives him or her an added boost of energy. That energy boost then allows that person's own internal healing mechanism to become mobilized into greater activity. True healing comes about when the cause of the condition or illness is addressed and transformed.

Keeping this in mind, let us look at how color can help jump-start the tired or diseased body. Color healing, known as Chromotherapy, can be implemented in a number of ways. The ancients built great halls of color healing, where individuals entered and were bathed in light that was filtered through various colored glass panels or windows.

Energy (spiritual) healers often supplement their healing work with color healing. As they lay their hands on the patient, they mentally direct specific color rays into the patient's aura and body. Oftentimes, the color used is inspired by the superconscious.

In healing colors act as balancers: we administer the color(s) someone needs more of, or we give the opposite of the color someone has too much of.

What is a Colour?

Colors are certain wavelengths of electro-magnetic energy seen through our eyes. The color we see is the part of the visible spectrum that is reflected back by a certain object.

Simply put, colour is just light of varying wavelengths and frequencies. Electromagnetic waves constantly surround us, and colour is part of those waves. Every single cell in the body needs light energy. Our cells absorb colour, and this affects us on every level, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Each colour has a different frequency, thereby having a different effect on the body when exposed. It is thought that the famous colours of the rainbow, red, yellow, green, blue, orange, violet and indigo resonate with the main energy centres of the body.

How Colours affect us?
  • Color is one of the languages of the soul, just look at inspired or meditative paintings.
  • They influence our mood and emotions.
  • They have their impact on our sense of well-being or un-easiness.
  • Using and avoiding certain colors is a way of self-expression; it sheds light on our personality.
  • Colors affect our way of perception (light colors make a space look big, a high ceiling looks less high when painted in a dark color, etc.)
  • Colors have a symbolic meaning which is immediately recognized by our subconsciousness. It must be said that not all colors mean the same to all persons and all cultures.
  • They influence the flow and amount of energy in our bodies.
  • Colors tell something about biological attraction and sexual availability.

What is Colour Therapy?

Color Therapy or Color Healing is the use of color in various forms for the purpose of creating balance and health in the human system. The human system includes not only the physical body, but also the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects (PEMS). Working with the PEMS is referred to as wholistic medicine.

Colour Therapy is an entirely non-invasive holistic treatment which aims to bring balance to the energy of our body. It is often used as a complementary therapy alongside other treatments, and is a popular go-to practice for people suffering depression, stress, and seasonal affective disorder.

It’s hard to ignore the stories of people who have received colour therapy and emerged feeling ways they didn’t think they could. There are many people sharing their experiences, even celebrities are raving about it. The thing about holistic practices, especially something like colour therapy, is that it’s beneficial and appropriate for people of all ages or condition. It’s not hard to see why holistic treatments have become as globally popular as they are today.

Pippa Merivale (Colour Therapist), explained to The Guardian what one might feel after a session. ”Colour is light; it throws light on things and shows you what you’ve not spotted in yourself – talents and gifts and hidden strengths, as well as the erroneous zones that it can help you to dissolve and flush out if you choose. You will emerge from a consultation with a feeling of freshness, a sense of authentic power and that’s exciting and very new.”

Saving Lives

Phototherapy, which is a treatment that utilises blue-coloured light, is specifically administered to newborn babies suffering jaundice. Jaundice is a medical condition which occurs when there is an obstruction of the bile duct, liver disease or an excessive break down of red blood cells. The most apparent symptom being yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, created by the pigment bilirubin which is a waste product. This process is called photo-oxidation. Simply put, the light penetrates the skin, adding oxygen to convert the excess bilirubin into a substance that can be safely excreted. Infants that are afflicted with this condition are effectively cured by this treatment, and that my friends is how light can save a life.

Thus colors have scientific relevance in our behavior and body healing process. It is on us how to use these effective therapies for our benefits. May we all lead a colorful life...
